Hans (J.) Berkel, MD, PhD
Hans
(J.) Berkel, MD, PhD is President and Chief Executive Officer of the Cancer
Prevention Institute and Director of the Division of Cancer Prevention and
Control Research in the Department of Community Health at the Wright State
University School of Medicine in Dayton, OH. An Internal Medicine specialist,
Dr. Berkel has focused his professional career on cancer epidemiology and
prevention. He is a Fellow of the American College of Epidemiology and the
Royal College of Physicians in The Netherlands, where he received his medical
training. Immediately prior to joining the Cancer Prevention Institute, he
was Associate Director for Cancer Prevention and Control of the Feist-Weiller
Cancer Center at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center (LSUHSC)
in Shreveport. At LSUHSC-S, he also served as Professor of Epidemiology.
After receiving his medical degree from the University of Utrecht Medical School, Utrecht, Holland, Dr. Berkel worked for two years at a small rural hospital in Nigeria, where he applied his medical skills from performing surgery to treating cholera. He returned to Holland to specialize in Internal Medicine and continued to earn his Ph.D. in Epidemiology from the University of Utrecht. The loss of his father to colon cancer and his internship at the Dutch Cancer Institute influenced his decision to focus on cancer research.
Teaching has been a major element in Dr. Berkels career. Prior to joining the Wright State University School of Medicine, he held professorships at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, the University of Alberta, the University of Calgary in Canada and at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport.
Dr. Berkel is also the
author of over 80 articles published in peer-reviewed medical journals and
has contributed chapters to major reference books and reports. He has served
as a reviewer for prestigious journals such as the Journal of the National
Cancer Institute, the Journal of Clinical Oncology, and the
Canadian Journal of Public Health, serves on many professional committees
and has presented his research on topics ranging from breast cancer to teen-age
smoking at more than 65 regional, national and international meetings. Dr.
Berkels current research involves chemo-prevention of polyps in the
colon.
