Mission
Our mission is to build a healthier community, through assisting the residents of the greater Miami Valley area in the fight against cancer by conducting high quality cancer prevention and control research and by providing effective cancer prevention education, outreach and screening programs.
Our History... The First Two Decades
The Cancer Prevention Institute was founded as Hipple Cancer Research Center in 1977. From its origins at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, the laboratory moved to Dayton, Ohio in 1979, where it was part of the Wright State University School of Medicine. It became an independent research facility in 1985 and was named in memory of Dayton industrialist and civic leader Bob Hipple who had died of cancer.
During the first two decades, scientists performed laboratory, or "bench" research. Accomplishments from this period include:
Studies of blood cell growth factors that led to the identification and partial purification of Meg-CSF, which boosts red blood cell production and relieves the anemia that can result from chemotherapy.
Identification and cloning of a gene, indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (INDO), associated with interferon-gamma, which gave clues to manipulating the spread of pathogens between cells.
Our Future... New Focus on Cancer Prevention and Control in 2000
Despite science’s best efforts at more effective cancer treatment, cancer remains the second leading cause of premature death among Americans. Most cancers take 20 to 30 years of growth before they can be found and diagnosed. At the same time, success of treatment is measured in "5-year survival". In other words, the opportunity to effectively intervene in the development process is much larger in the early phases. Prevention is better than cure!
In 1999, a careful assessment of cancer research and treatment needs by a panel of physicians and health care leaders resulted in a new focus on cancer prevention. (view PowerPoint presentation in Acrobat® Reader). If you do not have Adobe Acrobat® Reader, click here to download free software.)
Reflecting the new focus on cancer prevention, Hipple was renamed the Cancer Prevention Institute in January 2004. The Cancer Prevention Institute's scientific team focuses on epidemiology and the assessment of cancer prevention strategies, including chemoprevention. The intent is to translate results for cancer prevention research into programs which have fit the community. Therefore, a community Outreach division was created to develop community education programs focused on cancer prevention and the promotion of healthy lifestyle choices. In addition, Community Outreach works to provide effective cancer screening programs for underserved and uninsured people in our community.
Working collaboratively with other community organizations, the Cancer Prevention Institute provides programs to bring prevention information and cancer screening to all citizens of the greater Dayton area.
