Cancer Prevention Institute epidemiologist Jianjun Zhang, MD, PhD, has recently published a research paper in the prestigious international journal, Nutrition and Cancer. His paper, "Egg Consumption and Mortality from Colon and Rectal Cancers: an Ecological Study," appeared in 2003;46(2): 158-165.
Cancers of the colon and rectum are among the leading causes of cancer death in developed countries and are emerging as a major public health problem in developing countries. Eggs are consumed regularly and in large numbers in many populations. Establishing whether egg consumption may be linked to increased frequency of colon and rectal cancers could aid cancer prevention efforts around the world. Dr. Zhang studied data from 34 countries gathered over a period of three decades (1964-1994) and concluded that egg consumption does involve an increased risk for colon and rectal cancers.
Jianjun Zhang, MD, PhD, has also been invited to write a chapter to a book entitled "Nutrition and Alcohol: Linking Nutrient Interactions and Dietary Intake". This book, edited by Drs. Watson and Preedy, is published by the CRC Press in December 2003. The title of his chapter is "Measuring Energy Intake in Alcohol Drinkers" (The CRC Press, Boca Raton, FL, 2003, pp. 201-217). A fundamental prerequisite for any epidemiological study on the relation between diet and disease is an accurate assessment of dietary intake among study participants. Alcohol consumption is a common lifestyle habit in many populations worldwide. Alcohol intake itself has been linked to all-cause, cardiovascular, and cancer mortality. However, it remains unclear whether alcohol drinkers adequately report their energy intake in dietary surveys. In addition, it is still a matter of debate whether energy intake from alcoholic beverages replaces or adds to energy intake from food sources. In his chapter, Dr. Zhang addresses these essential issues in nutrition and nutritional epidemiology in reference to the findings from his own studies.
