The Cancer Genetics Program
Promoting Health and Education for Families with Cancer
Is there cancer in
your family?
If you have a family history of cancer, you and your relatives
may have an increased risk of developing it, too. The higher your risk, the
more you need close medical follow-up to help prevent cancer and ensure early
diagnosis. There
are hereditary forms of most types of cancer, including breast, ovarian, colorectal,
skin and prostate cancers.
Are you a candidate
for the Cancer Genetics Program?
The answer is yes, if your family history includes any of these:
The Cancer Genetics
Program
We are dedicated to helping people who have a family history of cancer. Here
are some of the services we provide:
About Genetic Testing
Genetic testing is an optional but important part of the Cancer Genetics Program. It identifies, with greater accuracy, those family members who have a greater risk for developing cancer and, therefore, may benefit most from cancer prevention and early detection programs. Genetic counseling must be undertaken before genetic testing can be done.

Frequently Asked Questions
about Genetic Counseling and testing through
the Cancer Genetics Program:
Who will benefit?
Those concerned about their personal or family history of cancer.
How do I make an appointment for an evaluation?
Call 937-641-5645 or 937-641-3800 to contact the Medical Genetics Department at The Childrens Medical Center.
Will my insurance cover these tests?
Most insurers now cover the cost of genetic counseling and testing. Coverage is assessed on an individual basis before genetic testing begins.
How is my privacy protected?
Many people are concerned that sharing genetic information with employers or insurers might lead to discrimination. State and federal laws make genetic discrimination illegal for most people. We take added precautions to protect cancer genetics records and release information only with the permission of the individual.
